Laugavegur Trail: A Different World Every Day

There are trails where you spend days walking toward one view. Laugavegur feels different. In Iceland, the ground can change colour beneath your feet, and the landscape you leave behind in the morning might look nothing like the place where you stop that evening.

The trail begins among the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar. Further on, there are stretches of dark sand, open spaces and rivers to cross. Eventually, the landscape softens into the greener valley of Þórsmörk. It’s hard to imagine all of that belonging to the same walk until you see how one place gives way to the next.

But a journey like this isn’t a series of perfect views. The wind can make you pull your jacket tighter. Your feet get wet. You spend part of the day watching where to put your next step, then suddenly look up and wonder how the world around you changed so much.

Those ordinary moments matter too. Reaching shelter, getting warm, and talking over the day with someone who walked it beside you can feel just as good as the view you stopped to photograph.
